Sioux Falls, SD, January 11,2021— On January 6th, 2021, our country saw the first violent transition in presidential power since 1812. Anti-democratic insurgents, emboldened by the rhetoric of President Trump and top Republican officials and political pundits, conspired to attack the Capitol building and its occupants in an attempt to prevent the legal transition to a Biden presidency. Insurgents came armed with weapons, pipe bombs, and the flex cuffs needed to take hostages. Five people, including a United States Capitol Police Officer, died during the attack. A sixth person, another U.S. Capitol Police Officer, has since taken his life.
Additional efforts to secure Capitol Hill during the Inauguration Day proceedings are on-going as internet murmurs suggest a continuation in anti-democracy insurgency violence. Federal agents are in the process of identifying and arresting participants in the mob, several of which are in custody. Mayor Muriel Bowser has extended her city's State of Emergency till January 24th, 2021. A 6:00 pm curfew is in effect. President Trump declared a federal State of Emergency in Washington, D.C., citing the “emergency conditions”. This action allows DHS and FEMA to assist the city in their emergency responses. The event has also generated numerous resignations from top legislative and law enforcement officials.
In reaction to the immediate threat to our democracy President Trump poses, the House Democrats will vote on Tuesday, 1/12/2021 for his impeachment and removal under the 25th Amendment. The National Progressive Party agrees that a Trump presidency presents a clear and present danger to the democratic process and supports his impeachment and removal under Article 25 of the Constitution. Ellee Spawn, Operations Director for NPP, asserts, "The democratic process is all that protects marginalized and oppressed peoples in our nation. Without it, we are subject to tyranny and ruination. Trump's impeachment and removal from office under the 25th is absolutely critical to restoring faith in the democratic process and preventing and deterring future attempts to disrupt democracy." If successful, impeachment proceedings will continue to the Senate.
The National Progressive Party is a burgeoning alternative to the existing two-party political duopoly. The NPP works from a progressive value system that fights inequality and injustice across our country’s economic, social, and environmental systems.
